Hakim Sanai - The path of Love

Think not the path of love
An easy way.
Here certain sense guide the Lover’s climb :
Its heights and depths defy
The plan of Matter.

Think not of this in careless terms
But bear in mind
Thy first station towards Love is nigh
When all is blotted out
But the Beloved

The Mystic’s way – all of the way
Is the path of the heart
To One Beloved
The quest of love –
With heart athrob.

The Master Sanai of Ghazna
Translated By Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah

One of the very greatest of poets and mystics of the east, Hakim Sanai (1077 -1150) was acknowledged by the Master Rumi as his teacher. The Poem above ….. is one of the Master of Ghazna’s ligher works. Sanai is one of the Sufi poets who have been recognized as having influenced Dante, who lived more than a century and half later. Sanai’s Journey of the Worshipper is a masterwork in Persian, dealing with the  experiences of the mystic on the path to enlightenment. It is almost bewildering to those who have not followed this route, in its sublime allegories and very many dimensions. But the beauty of the words and rhythm give it a haunting, unique  quality for those who can  read the original.
