Dorothy Hunt - Tendrils of Mind

No matter how many words
arise in your mind,
or how many places
its musings travel;

No matter how many
thoughts or opinions
it clings to,
how many attachments
to how many stories;

No matter how many shoots
called projections or memories,
or how many judgments
it imagines are true;

There is one single tendril
wound round all the others,
that must be unwound
if you want to be free;

The last one to drop
is the one you most cherish,
the one that insists
its productions are real;

The tendril that causes
all of your suffering?
The one that holds tightly
to a thought called "me."

Fakhruddin Iraqi - What a shame!

Many are the pains I've endured, what a shame!
My desires not fulfilled, not at all, what a shame!

In this world every door that I saw, I opened,
but no heart-holder’s face I ever saw, what a shame!

I became despondent, for before this hopeful eye
no fair-cheeked beauty ever came, what a shame!

Never did I see in this world a rose-garden
that didn't scrape my eye with a thorn, what a shame!

A beloved have I who does not recollect me:

Who else has such a beloved, [so aloof]? What a shame!

He observes my sickly heart, but never does he ask,
“What ever happened to that one who was infirm?” What a shame!

One-hundred times I've been to the threshold of his intimacy—
not once did he acquiesce to grant me audience, what a shame!

To this heart of mine from lamenting for his distance
arrives a [different] sorrow every moment, what a shame!

Without your face, my days have now expired;
not much more is remaining of this life—what a shame!

Of ‘Iraqi he doesn't inquire, until [‘Iragi] dies.
‘Thereupon says the World, “He's died. Yes, what a shame!”

Monica Dayakar - The Nothingness Of It All...

My heart was just breaking...

And yet strangely there was the utter peace of the quiescent centre that never left...

Even as my feet crossed the thresh hold...
There was not the slightest inclination to look back...

There was no back left...
Nor front...

The heart was just collapsing into itself...
And there was simultaneously...
An utter peace with it...
Even as the life I'd known...
The life that I'd called home...
Was evaporating right in front of my eyes...

Homeless I stood for a second...
One foot in...
And the other out...
The door...

My throat caught between a laugh and a cry...
I stood there stripped naked...
Of a lifetime...

And the feet began to move... of their own accord...

The caterpillar approach... suddenly gone...
The tendency to grasp the next leaf...
With the fore legs
Before the letting go of the hind...

Centerless the world spun...

Brilliantly hued...

I had lost my mind...

And love bubbled up...
And overflowed...
All over the land...
Colouring the world...

Hullo sunshine...

Life was heartbreakingly beautiful...

Even as it turned towards everyone and everything again...

Even on the me I had left behind...

It was like looking upon my self...

Everywhere and yet nowhere to be found...

Seeing as if for the first time...
Through baby eyes...

As love curled its fingers around itself...
And there was nothing there to grasp...
Not even love...

And I no more know what to call this...

It's not even as if you and I are each other...
As opposed to being separate selves...

Feels more like where you and I are not...

Yet there I cannot hold you close...
Nor kiss you...
Nor call you beautiful...
Or say I love you...

Only in this imaginary realm...

Can I call it love...

And say I love you...

Kissing you...
Kissing me...

It's impossible to make head or tail of it...

But how could I even begin to describe this...

The bliss of the hole in the heart...

An emptiness I'd been running away from...

The nothingness of it all...

And the everything-ness...

The emptiness... lush with the fullness...

The Nothingness Of It All...

Silent words arising...

The ocean sighing...

Collapsing back into itself...

Back...

Into...

The Nothingness Of It All

Rumi - Silence

"The story admits of being told up to this point,
But what follows is hidden, and inexpressible in words.
If you should speak and try a hundred ways to express it,
'Tis useless; the mystery becomes no clearer,
You can ride on saddle and horse to the sea-coast,
But then you must use a horse of wood (i.e. a boat).
A horse of wood is useless on dry land,
It is the special vehicle of voyagers by sea.
Silence is this horse of wood,
Silence is the guide and support of men at sea."

{The Masnavi of Jalaluddin Rumi. Abridged translation by
E. H. Whinfield, p.326.}

Jami - Identical

"The unique Substance, viewed as absolute and void of all phenomena, all
limitations and all multiplicity, is the Real (al-Haqq). On the other hand,
viewed in His aspect of multiplicity and plurality, under which He
displays Himself when clothed with phenomena, He is the whole created
universe. Therefore the universe is the outward visible expression of the
Real, and the Real is the inner unseen reality of the universe. The universe
before it was evolved to outward view was identical with the Real; and the
Real after this evolution is identical with the universe."

Eric Baret - Life cannot be thought

 art ruo-Hsin Wu

Q.I don't know why but I feel angry now.

Eric Baret  : Yes, because you try to understand. The mind
cannot understand. The only thing we can do together
is to come to see what is not. Yes, is not. The mind
wants to choose, but then you come to see very clearly
at some point that something is stopping you. There is
no freedom, there is nothing pre-determined either,
they are both concepts of the mind. You cannot have
one concept without the other. So yes, you say : “see
that you have a story”, and yes you can say : “there
is no such thing as a story”, because there is no one
there to “have any story”. So what do you do with that?

If you follow the two lines of feeling very deeply
you come to a blank state and in this blank state
there is dissolution. And you see it is not the one,
nor the other. They are both concepts. But these
concepts have been recalled from memory. In time it
becomes evident that life is not a concept. That life
cannot be thought.

That's why you can never say : “I understand
something.” This realization will knowingly remain as
a constant background present before any upsurge of
understanding. All knowing is included in not knowing.
The moment you say " I know this " you exclude the
opposite. So of course you challenge the knowledge
later on and it is very upsetting to the mind. We
realize that wanting to understand was a need to grasp
what cannot be grasped. It goes against what we have
said that there is no sense in anything. You may hear
that and feel very happy. To make sense out of the
idea that there is no sense in anything gives you a
feeling of security. Then someone tells you : " Look
you are making sense out of it " and then the mind
becomes crazy because it sees that it cannot not make
sense out of it. Because when you understand that
there is no sense in anything, you are saying to
yourself : " that makes sense " . You are falling into
the trap. So you have to constantly observe yourself
because you constantly want to grasp what you cannot
grasp and for the mind of course it is very upsetting.
But it works. You must see the mechanism of
understanding there is nothing to understand. There is
nothing to understand, — you hear that and say :
“Yes, now I understand that” and again you fall into
the trap. So you must stop knowingly before
understanding. Jean talked of it as a double absence.
That there is an absence within the absence that is
contained in the presence. But that's on Jean Klein's
level. (We could approach it in a more simple way.)

Q : But Jean Klein used to say that it is good to find
the limits, to push the understanding of the mind to
the very limit.

E : Jean Klein was beyond anything one can comprehend.
So I cannot talk about it. For me the need to know the
limits of the mind is a very beautiful limited-mind
concept, because there is no such thing as a limit to
the mind. The mind is unlimited. Like if you say :
“You must come to feel the limits of your body. It is
unlimited. You can spend 60 million lives and still
every new day — every day you can feel more deeply and
every day you can think more deeply. The limit of the
mind on the body level is totally horizontal. Every
day you can be more certain. So what ? You are going
to die and could have been so much more certain. So
the problem is not to be really certain. It will
remain limited all your life. We must live with that.
Our mind, our body will stay gross all our life. But
you can see that and when I clearly see that whatever
conclusion I reach on the mental level will always be
gross, there is a space in me which resonates, in
which gross feeling and subtle feeling, high mind, low
mind come to be seen as exactly equal. And this space
is presence. And this space is something I can never
reach by making my body subtle or by thinking high
thoughts. This space is always with me when I do not
pretend that I need to make my body subtle or that I
need to my mind to think high thoughts.

I respect what Jean said when Jean was there to say
it. Coming from him, yes it was okay. But it is not
something I would extract from his teaching. Jean's
teaching was alive because of Jean. When Jean would
say something is beautiful, his presence brought it
alive. But now if one says : " Jean said that " , it is
like saying : " Ramana Maharishi said that " . It's
grotesque. Ramana Maharishi never said anything. The
words we have from him are an expression but they were
not his teaching. So I think it is very important we
do not extract words from a spiritual teaching because
spiritual teaching contains no words. We use words
sometimes to convey a spiritual teaching. But the
words of a teacher mean what they mean. So yes, what
he said is of course true but it was to be realized at
the time he said it. It was true then. At another time
he would say the opposite too. So then what was
happening ? He said this and he said that. He said
everything is conditioned and he said everything is
free. So read the two sentences, put them together and
it makes no sense to you. Nothing. So hearing one at
the right time will bring you to silence and then
hearing the opposite at the right time will also bring
you to silence. But now it remains only as a sentence,
and a sentence only brings you agitation. So when you
read Jean's book, if it brings you to silence you are
ready but if you remain in the argument read it again,
so that you come to forget the argument and only
experience silence. But it is important to see how
much we have this mechanism in us to want to grasp.
It's enough to just see it… constantly. And there is
nothing wrong with it ; we just knowingly experience
this grasping process. I feel it in my shoulders, in
my mouth, in my tongue, in my forehead, in the way I
walk, in the way I breathe, in the way I look, in the
way I listen, in the way I read, in the way I think,
in the way I act and constantly, knowingly, I live my
pretension without the pretension of being free from
pretension. Clearly. That's spiritual enquiry.

(Pause)

Some people find it difficult to leave after spending
time together : they feel that something is missing.
This is the ultimate feeling. Something is missing.
What is missing could never be present. Not on this
level. If we leave with the idea that “we have had a
very good talk, now I understand” then it was a waste
of time. We must leave with the feeling that we never
touched upon what was important. It can never be
touched upon, it can never be thought, it can never be
understood. So we leave with a very strange feeling
that of a space which we can not name, we can never
really feel in any way. What is there, is there, that
is all. The discussion, all the exercises were just a
moving, a breathing in that space. But it's very
uncomfortable. The ego needs to go to a seminar and
leave and say : “Now I know something : a new
exercise and I understood something.” Here it is the
opposite. We meet and we leave without understanding
anything, without becoming anything, without knowing
anything. It needs some kind of maturity to be able to
cope with it. And if somebody does not have this
maturity sometimes they get mad and go somewhere else
to become spiritual or to become something. But no we
did not talk about what is important. It is like when
we are in love with somebody, we never say what is
important. We talk about movies, we talk about
dancing, we talk about beauty but there is something
that we don't talk about and that is the course of our
relationship. And sometimes we leave the person that
we love and the mind may tell you “it's too bad, I did
not really express my feelings.” But it should be that
way. There is nothing to concretize. The beauty of
life, the beauty of a relationship is to never touch
upon what is important. It's an art, the art of not
giving substance, or reference points. That is what we
do in the bodywork. We come to the body feeling where
there is no inside, no outside. There is no substance.
This open state is the royal way to not creating an
imaginary world and a self.

Alain Joly - The Ardent Disciple

We are strolling down a lane of a thousand gorgeous temples. Only we need to see it, to give ourself the gift of sightseeing. We need to open our life to this reality. But first, we must release this tension present in believing to be a self, and honour this temple of pure being that we are when all our beliefs and identifications have been met and dismantled. Then open your eyes. You are living in a beautiful, never yet visited land. Every fellow human being met, is a temple of consciousness. Every animal encountered, a temple of presence. Every living being that crosses our eyes, our ears, our touch, a temple of awareness, a reflection of our being. We are touring in a world of our self. Never in a distant, exotic land. Always in the comfort of our home as being. Forever linked to and as our deepest presence. We are visitors of presence, being both the presence that visits — as our self, and the presence that is visited — as apparent others.

Down this lane of presence, you will meet countless other temples. Every tree that stands majestic in your gaze, every flower that attracts you with its net of beauty, every fallen leaf on your path, every drop of rain landing on your skin, all temples of your own, scrumptious being. And every object surrounding you, a temple of isness. The clothes you are wearing are existing things. So is the watch at your wrist. Or the chair you are sitting on, or a pen, or a musical sound — the thousand fellow objects of your life. All sharing this same quality of presence, of isness. All temples that reflect the inner beauty or quality of your self, that can be met at every step. See them. Hear them. Touch them. Feel them as your own. Sense their making as your own. Honour them every time you can. They will tell you the story of your self. They are like sculptures of being in the temple of your life.

Don’t forget that every traveller or companion of life, is an altar of friendship, a temple for love. And every object distant or at hand, a recipient for beauty. And every felt presence, an echo of peace, and an occasion for happiness. All are hymns of the divine. All praises to god. But don’t stop here, for there is more to pray, or meditate on; more invitations to honour; more temples to enter; ever more heart openings to experience. Life is a dynamic thing. Bow to everything that shows up. Do not bypass the fact that behind every glance of most human beings you meet, and of many animals too, is also a temple with a cross of suffering. Be sensitive to it. That’s how you will come to exercise your compassion. And notice that within any word uttered by any conscious self, or behind any cry of a distant animal, is a sermon to learn from, by a priest in being. Listen to it carefully. That’s how you will come to exercise your humbleness, or your understanding. And in many actions or behaviours of many of your living friends battling through existence, you will be offered a lesson in equanimity, in courage. Be aware of it. Take it as the expression of your own living self, and an occasion for you to face your unmet challenges. These are the many temples placed at every step of your everyday life. A lane of temples to rest both your broken soul or your radiant being. Enjoy the sight. Be the ardent disciple of it all.

Nancy Neithercut ~ The magic he had been seeking

And as long as he could remember he was smitten with sunflowers
he read and studied botany and biochemistry
discovering how they grew

he studied physiology and neurology
to discover how he could see and touch them

longing to capture their beauty
he would drive to large fields of them
and sit with them all day
watching their beautiful faces follow the sun

he grew them and watched as delicate birds would land on them and eat the seeds .............

and after decades of desire
to know them
he realized he could never know what sunflowers were

he could never even know what yellow was

and he realized that it was his longing to capture the magic
that he felt so deeply
created an imaginary barrier between himself and the sun
and painted imaginary lines between the birds and the flowers

realizing he had never been separate from the magic
or life
he wept

the magic was the unfigureoutablity
the uncatchableness

it was never lost
yet it could never be held or captured
as he was the magic he had been seeking
