(c) MysticSaint. Singapore. Sadiq Alam - Conversation with the Inner Master

Taking me beside the shore,
The Master asked:
Here is a book and here is the sea.
Which one you choose?

I looked down at my heart,
And my heart whispered: sea.
So I whispered back to my master,
'Sea'.

He said congratulations.
Never make yourself limited by limited knowledge,
But seek knowledge among the signs in nature.

The pages of the book will finish, and
It’s value will come to an end.

But the flow of the sea will never cease,
The waves are infinite.

Hazrat Inayat Khan - The Dance of the soul

“I have loved in life and I have been loved.
I have drunk the bowl of poison from the hands of love as nectar,
and have been raised above life's joy and sorrow.
My heart, aflame in love, set afire every heart that came in touch with it.
My heart has been rent and joined again;
My heart has been broken and again made whole;
My heart has been wounded and healed again;
A thousand deaths my heart has died, and thanks be to love, it lives yet.
I went through hell and saw there love's raging fire,
and I entered heaven illumined with the light of love.

I wept in love and made all weep with me;
I mourned in love and pierced the hearts of men;
And when my fiery glance fell on the rocks, the rocks burst forth as volcanoes.
The whole world sank in the flood caused by my one tear;
With my deep sigh the earth trembled, and when I cried aloud the name of my beloved,
I shook the throne of God in heaven.
I bowed my head low in humility, and on my knees I begged of love,
"Disclose to me, I pray thee, O love, thy secret."
She took me gently by my arms and lifted me above the earth,

and spoke softly in my ear,
"My dear one, thou thyself art love, art lover,
and thyself art the beloved whom thou hast adored.”

Nisargadatta Maharaj - That Beingness that you are

THAT ABOUT WHICH NOTHING CAN BE SAID,
I HAVE SAID...

Whatever you think you have got as an identity, have you acquired it
by effort or intention? Is there anything you have really got?
No. This body, this consciousness, has come spontaneously, so sleep comes when it likes, even waking and sleep are not in your control.
What is yours?
Who has this knowledge of the Self by his own effort?
This pseudo entity thinks that it is he who is active and doing.
I am talking to you now as consciousness. Can any one of you give me an indication of that knowledge, that beingness that you are?

Q. Consciousness thanks consciousness over and over again.

M. That about which nothing can be said, I have said. Accept that
drop, taste it and swallow it.

Hear this: God can only exist in the heart of man, not elsewhere.
You identify with the body and limit yourself, and yet, remember, do not neglect this body, this is the house of God, take care of it. Only in this body can God be realized.
It is only for an analytic understanding that God, your body, your
Self, have been divided, but it is one Self, each is intimately related.

Taya Malakian - Kali

I am the one in the mask,
in the dark.
My feet buried deep in the earth
my hands covered in the grit.
I am the one who has no fear
of the blood, sweat, tears
of this world
for I am painted with them all.
I take all your suffering in with each breath
and I transmute it back into the light
that it is.
I see only truth
so your lies,
your fears,
your insecurities
mean nothing to me.
I am the one who penetrates
through your dreams of chaos
to show you what you will not see.
I am the one who ignites
the fire within you that burns
away illusion
and guides you through the night.
That deep howl inside of you
that wants to sing your truth
is the language that I speak in.
And the vast silence of the infinite
is the space in which I hear.

Fakhruddin 'Iraqi - At the tavern door

I have seen that the lane of piety stretches out,
far, far into the distance;
My dearest friends, can you not show me then
the way of the madman?
Bring me a glass of Magian wine
that I may drink deep
for I have given up all thought
of ascetic piety;
or if the pure wine has all been downed
bring me the cloudy dregs
for thick residue lights up the heart
and illuminates the eyes.
Tuppence for the Sufi meeting house!
I flee the company of the righteous;
fill up a row of glasses with wine
and bring me the first.
I have no rules or regulations,
nor heart nor religion -
only I remain, and you, sitting in the corner
and the wealth of Poverty.
All fear of God, all self-denial I deny;
bring wine, nothing but wine
for in all sincerity I repent
my worship which is but hypocrisy.
Yes, bring me wine, for I have renounced all renunciation
and all my vaunted self-righteousness
seems to me but swagger and self-display.
Now for a time let my proof be wine
against the sorrow of Time
for only in drunkenness can one be free
of the hour's grief.
Once I am thoroughly drunk, what difference
if I end up in a church or in Mecca?
Once I've abandoned myself, what matter
if I win Union - or separation?
I've been to the gambling house and seen
that the losers there are pure;
I've been to the monastery and have found
no one but hypocrites.
Now I've broken my repentance, at least
do not break our covenant:
at least welcome this broken heart and say
"How are you? Where have you been?"
I've been to Mecca, to circle the Kaaba
but they refused me entrance
saying "Off with you!  What merit have you earned
outside, that we should admit you within?"
Then, last night, I knocked
at the tavern door;
from within came a voice: "'Iraqi! Come in!
for you are one of the chosen!"

sri muruganar - Awareness watching Awareness

Sayings from Sri Muruganar's
“The Garland of Guru’s (Sri Ramana Maharshi’s) Sayings”
on the subject of Turning Inward

Ignoring and turning one’s attention away from thoughts
and towards Awareness watching Awareness (14 Sayings)

 921.     None can confront and overcome the mind.
Ignore it, then, as something false and unreal.
Know the Self-Awareness as the real ground and stand firm rooted in it.
Then the mind’s movements will gradually subside.

1192.     The ego image moves reflected in the mind’s waves.
How to stop this movement, how to regain the state of stillness?
Don’t observe these movements, seek the Self instead.
It is wisdom to gain and abide in silence.

1193.     The Seers declare that pure silence
is firm abidance in egoless, true Awareness.
For such thought-free silence,
the means is clinging to the Self-Awareness
within the Heart.

421.     The one true light there is, is pure Awareness.
Other kinds of knowledge clinging to it, and claiming to be real,
are ego-born conceptual clouds.
To trust them is sheer foolishness.

424.     What if one knows, the subtle secret, of manifold inscrutable mysteries?
Until one knows the Awareness which reveals all other knowledge,
does one know the Truth?

529.     The individual’s thirst will vanish,
only when the habits-predispositions-tendencies, of the frenzied mind, die,
and direct experience comes of pure Awareness.
If mirage water could quench thirst,
then only would indirect knowledge satisfy the individual’s longing.

644.     Those who do not keenly seek and recognize
the Being Awareness shinning incessant in the heart,
sink deep into delusive illusion,
due to the denotative knowledge piled up by the mounting ego.

750.     What we incessantly think of, that we become.
Hence, if we keenly seek the Self-Awareness,
and think of nothing else,
the malady of birth will cease,
and all thoughts will end.

1161.     What need is there for any thinking for those
who in the thought-free bliss of Self-Awareness, live their lives?
All they experience is bright stillness.
In this supreme state, there is no “other” and nothing to gain.

1184.     Shining as the bright void,
devoid of concepts raised by the villainous ego,
this is the true experience of infinite Being-Awareness,
the one non-dual bliss of pure silence.

1197.     When the ego, shaking off all tricky concepts,
finally merges in the silence of the Heart,
the fullness of blissful, bright Self-Awareness, this,
this is what the sages call transcendent speech.

1238.     The Self, who is pure Awareness, transcending thought,
is only known to heroic seers,
who with minds extinct,
abide thought-free within the Heart,
and not to those whose minds are still engaged in thought.

917.     As in the sky covered with thick clouds,
no eye can see the glorious sun,
one fails to see one’s Self-Awareness,
when the mind firmament is darkened by a dense cloud of thoughts.

918.     He who has vanquished thought,
only he sits like an emperor on the neck of the majestic elephant, knowledge.
Know for certain that the mind’s movements alone
give rise to birth and every cruel pain and sorrow.

Nisargadatta Maharaj - Aware

To be aware is to be awake.
Unaware means asleep.
You are aware anyhow, you need not try to be.
What you need is to be aware of being aware.
Be aware deliberately and consciously,
broaden and deepen the field of awareness.
You are always conscious of the mind,
but you are not aware of yourself as being conscious.

Annamalai Swami - on Self-Enquiry

Bhagavan [Ramana Maharshi] has said: 'When thoughts arise stop them from developing by enquiring, "To whom is this thought coming?" as soon as the thought appears. What does it matter if many thoughts keep coming up? Enquire into their origin or find out who has the thoughts and sooner or later the flow of thoughts will stop.'

This is how self-enquiry should be practiced.

When Bhagavan spoke like this he sometimes used the analogy of a besieged fort. If one systematically loses off all the entrances to such a fort and then picks off the occupants one by one as they try to come out, sooner or later the fort willl be be empty. Bhagavan said that we should apply these same tactics to the mind. How to go about doing this? Seal off the entrances and exits to the mind by not reacting to rising thoughts or sense impressions. Don't let new ideas, judgements, likes, dislikes, etc. enter the mind, and don't let rising thoughts flourish and escape your attention. When you have sealed off the mind in this way, challenge each emerging thought as it appears by asking, 'Where have you come from?' or 'Who is the person who is having this thought?' If you can do this continuously, with full attention, new thoughts will appear momentarily and then disappear. If you can maintain the siege for long enough, a time will come when no more thoughts arise; or if they do, they will only be fleeting, undistracting images on the periphery of consciousness. In that thought-free state you wlil begin to experience yourself as consciousness, not as mind or body.

However, if you relax your vigilance even for a few seconds and allow new thoughts to escape and develop unchallenged, the siege will be lifted and the mind will regain some or all of its former strength.

In a real fort the occupants need a continuous supply of food and water to hold out during a siege. When the supplies run out, the occupants must surrender or die. In the fort of the mind the occupants, which are thoughts, need a thinker to pay attention to them and indulge in them. If the thinker witholds his attention from rising thoughts or challenges them before they have a chance to develop, the thoughts will all die of starvation. You challenge them by repeatedly asking yourself 'Who am I? Who is the person who is having these thoughts?' If the challenge is to be effective you must make it before the rising thought has had a chance to develop into a stream of thoughts.

Mind is only a collection of thoughts and the thinker who thinks them. The thinker is the 'I'-thought, the primal thought which rises from the Self before all others, which identifies with all other thoughts and says, 'I am this body'. When you have eradicated all thoughts except for the thinker himself by ceaseless enquiry or by refusing to give them any attention, the 'I'-thought sinks into the Heart and surrenders, leaving behind it only an awareness of consciousness. This surrender will only take place when the 'I'-thought has ceased to identify with rising thoughts. While there are still stray thoughts which attract or evade your attentoin, the 'I'-thought will always be directing its attention outwards rather than inwards. The purpose of self-enquiry is to make the 'I'-thought move inwards, towards the Self. This will happen automatically as soon as you cease to be interested in any of your rising thoughts.

Jeff Foster - The Circle of Life

All over the world, and in the news every day, people killing people. People on one ‘side’ killing people on the other ‘side’. Each ‘side’ claiming that they are right. Each ‘side’ holding onto ancient pain, each ‘side’ unwilling be the first to let go, coming up with all the reasons in the world why they can't and won't. A tragic tale as old as humanity itself.

When will we wake up to the obvious fact that we are all the same Consciousness in disguise? That no matter who we think we are, no matter how we appear, beyond our stories and histories, our religions, our nationalities, our beliefs, the colour of our skin, our heavy pasts and uncertain futures, we are all expressions of the One life? That in truth there are no Israelis or Palestinians, Jews or Christians, Muslims or Buddhists, atheists or agnostics, Republicans or Democrats, gurus or disciples, that those images can never define us. That who we truly are at the most fundamental level is indefinable, mysterious, never fixed or separate, never identified with an image, just as the vast ocean can never be defined by its waves.

Consciousness has no religion, and no nationality. It gives birth to Palestinians and Israelis, Iraqis and Americans, light and dark, the yin and yang of the ever-changing dream world.

As consciousness itself, when we hurt each other, we are only hurting our own brothers and sisters, our own kin, waves of ourselves. We are only fighting reflections of our original Face. We are only killing the ones we love, ancient friends from long ago.

Outer war has never lead to inner peace. How much more bloodshed? How much more pain? How many more men, women and children must disappear into infinity before we wake up?

That bleeding child is my own. The circle of life takes no 'sides'.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz - Lullaby of a Palestinian Child

Don’t cry child,
your mother has only
just cried herself to sleep.

Don’t cry child,
just a while ago
your father took leave
of all his sorrows.

Don’t cry child,
your brother has gone
to another land chasing
after his butterfly dreams.

Don’t cry child,
your sister has married
and left for another country.

Don’t cry child,
in your courtyard
they bathed the dead sun,
and buried the moon,
before leaving.

Don’t cry child,
if you cry,
mother, father, sister, brother,
the moon and the sun, all
will make you cry endlessly

But maybe if you smile,
they will one day all return
in a different guise
to play with you.

J.C. Amberchele - Truth

There are truths and there are untruths, and there are a
myriad of renditions and gradations of each. And then there
is Truth. Truth has no opposite. There are no different versions,
no degrees or shades of Truth. Truth be told, truth
cannot be told. Thus it is said to be unsayable, spoken of as
unspeakable, described as indescribable, for it is no-thing, is
void, empty, absent even of absence – and for this reason is
Presence Itself.
Truth is timeless. It has no beginning or end. Therefore
the way and the goal are the same, and that way and that
goal is Looking To See. All the religions of the world fall
short of Truth because Truth is not religious. Everything
that has ever been said in the name of God or Buddha or
Self can be discarded in favor of one look. For only Looking
To See will open the gate to Truth.
The proposition is that at the very center of your being
lies Truth. That which you think is “your being” is not
“yours” but is Truth Itself. You have no separate being apart
from Truth. You as who you think you are have nothing to
do with it, nothing to do with anything except as Truth having
everything to do with Itself.
Because Truth is at the center of your being, it is easy to
see. But like a man peering through his glasses searching for
his glasses, it is so easy to see that you miss it. In fact, Truth
is what you are, where you are, when you are. It is never
anywhere or any when else because there is not anywhere or
any when that you are not. Truth is everything that you see,
hear, touch, taste, think, or feel because there is nothing
outside of what you are. Truth is Who You Are, seeing only
Yourself, and you are both the seer and the seen – simply
said, you are Seeing Itself.
Thus the directive is to look. Look back. Look at what
is looking. Turn your attention 180 degrees from where you
normally look “out there” and see the awake emptiness here
where you are. Notice that it has no edges, no boundaries, is
infi nite in scope; is pure, clear, transparent emptiness, and
for that reason is open capacity for the world, is luminous
space wedded to what fills it, always right here, always
nearer than anything because everything fits within it.
This seeing who you are is not mysterious or vague or
somehow veiled. On the contrary, it is simple, concrete,
available. Likewise, it is revealed in simple, childlike ways,
ways that might seem ridiculous or naive to those of us who
value what we have learned and who we have become.
To anyone steeped in objective thinking, the sage may
seem a simpleton, a fool, especially when that sage lifts his
hand and points an index finger at his face and tells us he
sees he is the source of the universe, that in place of a head
he has the world, that should we bother to check in like
manner, perhaps we would discover the same.
For Truth cannot be reached by intellectual understanding.
Talking and reading about Truth is not the same as seeing
Truth. Words can become a barrier and, far too often,
an escape from the realization of Who You Are. But for
seekers of Truth, however many paths are taken, the arrival
is a single step through the eye of a needle, and that step is
not a word but a look, is not outward but inward. And what
does one see here? Surely not the eye of a needle but an Eye
as vast as the cosmos, an Eye that holds and beholds all that
one is – the universe itself. Look, and see for yourself!
